The roof system is a great example of this. The roof structure is made from larch sourced within the UK, and like many of Down to Earth&#8217;s buildings, will feature a turf roof. Turf roofs are great because:<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/development.21stwebb.co.uk\/dto\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/imported\/cobuchaf.jpg\" rel=\"prettyPhoto[gallery-3N1J]\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-medium wp-image-1278 alignleft\" style=\"padding-right: 10px;\" src=\"https:\/\/development.21stwebb.co.uk\/dto\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/imported\/cobuchaf-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/development.21stwebb.co.uk\/dto\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/imported\/cobuchaf-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/development.21stwebb.co.uk\/dto\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/imported\/cobuchaf.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>They blend into the landscape<\/li>\n<li>Provide habitat for wildlife<\/li>\n<li>Provide good insulation for buildings<\/li>\n<li>Slow down the release of water helping to prevent flooding in heavy rainfall.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\nIn order to increase the thermal efficiency of our building, we&#8217;re using a roofing system made up of multiple layers; the installation process goes like this:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The roof timbers are dried using a blowtorch, and fast-drying primer is painted on<\/li>\n<li>A felt vapour control layer (VCL) is torch-bonded onto the primed roof timber.<\/li>\n<li>160mm rigid insulation boards are cut to fit, and then bonded to the VCL<\/li>\n<li>A second felt layer is bonded to the insulation boards<\/li>\n<li>A final impermeable membrane is bonded onto this felt layer<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Our new training centre is an interesting mix of cutting edge and traditional building practice, with the emphasis always on sustainability.
